Jason Video: St. John’s first traffic report
Jason brought us some raw video of the traffic mess in the newly-lighted roundabout.
We decided to have a little fun with it. Our DC readers may particularly enjoy.
Let’s hope we never really need Bob, but we thank him for helping us have a good laugh.

Jason – You have done Bob Marbourg proud! I hope you sent him a link. Good Job!

Too funny! Exactly how I felt yesterday stuck in it on my way to pick Toni up from work. Gotta tell you though, I think Butch and the guys have been doing a great job under the circumstances. Not an easy location for a major project.

I think the low hovering traffic copter will be a nice touch to the roundabout…

There are many roundabout projects being built around the country, but St. John wins the award for doing the most challenging one — no way to completely detour traffic while you’re building it. This will be world-class when it’s done.

Awesome, thanks for the laugh!

We know the French designed DC and the French dislike us and that’s why they put in all those traffic circles. Really, the large circles were designed for horse & carriages so they could turn around. Now, my beach town added a traffic circle similar in size to the one on St. John. The first weekend it was open, there were a reported 30 fender benders. The next weekend, the town employed police to direct traffic for the next 14 weeks until permanent flashing red YIELD signs were installed. They look good with all the floral landscaping and light house in the middle. Now traffic backs up for blocks due to the volume of cars only during peak times. I’m sure the local VI government calculated the volume of traffic during peak times coming from all directions, time it takes to enter/exit the circle and determined that the traffic circle is the best way to move the traffic.

Bob Marbourg steers me home every evening back here in the real world (between business updates – thanks Jeff…). God help us all if he’s needed on STJ someday… Well done, and thanks for the belly laugh…

A roundabout should ultimately be a good solution for that site. Research shows roundabouts reduce congestion significantly compared with stop sign intersections. One side benefit of that is reduced vehicle emissions and fuel consumption. A study in Virginia found that replacing just 10 intersections with roundabouts would save 200,000 gallons of fuel per year. Other studies found that roundabouts cut carbon monoxide emissions by 30 to 40 percent.

That was so good, Jason! I loved it! Great footage, too. It looks like you shot it from a helicopter.

Fantastic! I got a special thrill out of running my first red light on St. John yesterday.

Yes, the French thought up these “rond points” or traffic circles, but they also institutionalized “the priorite a droite” rule, i.e. whoever is to your right has the right of way.
Funny viedeo… having just returned from 2 wks, at St John, we suffered through it all…

absolute classic…thanks.

Wow! Is that really Bob Marboug? I listen to him every day driving home! That’s hilarious hearing him talk about Cruz Bay. My brain kept expecting him to say Rock Creek Parkway or Constitution Avenue!

This was soooo funny. Bob Marbourg not so funny when I am sitting in the traffic in DC listening to him. I have only been to STJ in May and have had just minor little traffic backups. Looks like its going to be a bit more of a pain to go fill up bottles at the water plant. However, I would agree with Quenton about being stuck in traffic anywhere on STJ.

We cruised through there this afternoon, no problems whatsoever.
Fun video, though.

That left me giggling!! Love it! Thanks Jason!

I ran the stop light tonight and I wasn’t wearing my seat belt. Shhhhh …
August 22nd, 2009 23:25
Thanks for all the great comments. Hopefully I will be able to get some video of the completed roundabout… in 2016

We were snorting this morning as we watched this! All we need is the STJ business update now!
