US Airways adds nonstop from Boston

There is beautiful, summertime Boston….

And there is winter Boston….
Starting in December, there is another way to get away from winter Boston to always summer St. John.
US Airways is adding nonstop service from Boston to St. Thomas (thanks to some incentives from our Tourism Chief.)
US Airways joins American, which already serves Boston nonstop.
While we love summertime visits to Boston, the difference between winter Boston, and this, goes without saying.

It would be great if the direct service was only one way! This is both the dream and the harsh reality New Englander’s face on every trip to St John. And it’s much worse on the return….

Just a Heads Up From Yesterdays Boston Globe:
US Airways now will charge $20, instead of $15, for the first checked bag and $30, up from $25, for the second, when bags are checked online. Travelers who check bags at the airport will pay $25 for the first and $35 for the second — an extra $5 per bag.
Luckily one packs light coming to the VI. Try and get all you can in with your snorkel gear into one bag and fear not, your duty free booze isn’t counted as checked baggage!

It is sad that direct service from both Detroit and Minneapolis on Delta/Northwest was lost this year. For many of us,who connect in these cities, then again in Atlanta, it make the trip a two day affair…which means a total of four days of travel in a one week vacation. This kills the whole idea of coming to the VI’s

BUT…the BIG mystery (un1ess it’s just my computer, or is it a new TV mystery and we’re the unknowing 1ive cast),…What happened to the August 27th edition of On-St John? Did someone drive on the right? Did someone go to Boston to take those pictures? Or is it just is1and time? S1eepy-time August in St John, but I’m on the ske1eton-crew, a1ways here, he1ping to ho1d it together, and I need my dai1y shot of On-St John!

About Carib Mark’s post…does anyone know if it would make financial sense to simply ship your luggage before-hand and carry on the all-important snorkel gear …might also reduce the odds of your luggage getting lost (was one direct flight to Colorado once and the airline still found a way to lose another passenger’s luggage) Anyone know anyone who might have shipped a few thingsthings to St. John in recent years…anyone, anyone???

SteveV-
There seem to be quite a few people who ship there stuff before they go. Check out the Virgin Islands on line form. Most seem to use Connections using USPS priority flat rate boxes. We are going to do that next spring.

Now if only Spirit Airlines would do a direct flight to St. Thomas, the stop-overs are terrible and makes for an agonizingly long day to get to paradise. Our last trip to STJ we had delays and we finally arrived at our villa at 7:00PM and we began our day at 3:30am.

Sally and Steve,
I know those who have done the shipping thing in the past. Priority flat rate is good but getting flippers into those boxes isn’t easy so, your shipping costs can get a bit much especially if not flat rate and the weight increases your cost.
Connections is a great place to ship to. Just give them a call before you ship so they expect it and they’ll tell you all you need to know including their modest fee for the service. The people there are very nice!
Bottom line, pricew it out first by flat rate or if not size and weight and keep in mind even though this whole airline baggage thing’s a bit of a scam from when fuel was way high 2 yrs ago.(and is still collected and increased?) The shipping may be more than the extra bag loaded with lots more stuff would be. Hope that said something logical.

Since I haven’t flown in a few of years, it just looked like the airlines might be starting to price/scam themselves out of carrying luggage and there might be less expensive alternatives

seriously. good. news. more options. better.

Be sure to put a tracer on anything you ship and give it WAAAYY more time than the USPS claims as all of our mail now goes through Puerto Rico and sometimes it takes weeks or more for first class or even priority! The mail in the USVI no longer stays in the territory and goes to PR to be sorted by machine (“much quicker”) and returned to us. An express envelope from St John to St Croix took THREE months!!! Only ship those things that you can do without should it arrive after you leave! Good luck. Connections is great, say hi to Cid….know that it is USPS and not UPS.
PS: thanks for the great pix of my old stomping ground of Beacon Hill and the shot of the Bunker Hill Monument (which is on Breed’s Hill).

Wow, that picture makes me long for the beauty of winter. Maybe not the best illustration for this piece!

“….without saying” indeed.

I called about the non stop on American a while back and they said they got rid of it. I haven’t seen it available in a long time. So I am happy to hear about USAir’s flight.
August 29th, 2009 11:17
AA’s nonstop is there, for December at least.
August 30th, 2009 08:28
AA doesn’t have a non-stop in the summertime but they resume again in the fall and winter.
Boston nevah evah compares to St. John no matter what season!!! There are parts of New England that are pretty at best but not breathtaking!!!

I booked our trip for November and couldn’t find any non stops from Boston to STT. I guess I should have waited 2 more weeks. We love St. John, but hate the trip, so I always look for non stops.
