Spice Cam: 1 Million Served

The St. John Spice Cam at the Dockside building by the Cruz Bay ferry dock just logged its 1-millionth visit. And it reached seven figures in just 11 months.
The camera keeps a constant eye on ferry passengers coming and going, dinghies and boats arriving and departing, and vacationers waving to friends who might be watching back home.
“When we put the camera up we had no idea how popular it would be. People actually come into the store and say thanks,” says St. John Spice co-owner Ruth Ernst. “It’s been a lot of fun.”
Visitor number 1 million came just before 6 pm Monday. Ruth, who held up a hopeful 1,000,000 sign earlier in the day, raced to the beach to write “Thanks” in the sand just as the sun was setting.

Love the camera. I can’t start my day without taking a peek at the dock. When it’s snowing or the wind chill is below freezing here in Pittsburgh, the camera lets me dream a little bit of a better place. Thank you for sharing you piece of heaven with the rest of us.

Thank You!
What a great way to start my day… and end my night. Unfortunately, we won’t be visiting St. John this year for the second year in a row. We traveled to St. John for 21 years in a row – now, the economy and college have something to do about it. I do have 2 villas for rent week 29 and week 30 at The Westin if anyone is interested.
The spicecam keeps me in touch with my dreams and lifelong goal. Someday, I will be living on St. John.
Happy Tuesday!
Happy Thanksgiving Ruth!

when i first saw the cam last summer, i was annoyed that no one cleaned up the area around the palm. so when i got there for the first time in august, i grabbed all the dead branches and trash and threw them away! wish the cam was tilted up just a little bit more…
November 24th, 2009 17:51
Thanks everyone!
Perhaps we should do something more festive for two million hits.
Maybe get a band or something.
November 24th, 2009 22:57
I check the spice cam every day, several times. At work my coworkers ask me to check the web cam for them, they have all gotten where they need the fix too. Thanks Ruth and Ron!!!
November 24th, 2009 23:08
I checked the cam at 5:30 a.m. EST (as always) and there was still a little bit left of Ruth’s message written in the sand. Thanks so much for being part of my routine… stretch… coffee… shower… check the web cam…smile…

November 25th, 2009 14:30
Congratulations! I’ll be there soon for my first visit. A couple of days ago I watched it for 2 hours straight so I’d be sure to see the complete ferry cycle, and I’ve already lined up people to watch me wave when I arrive
How about a photo of the cam itself – is it easily visible from the dock?
November 25th, 2009 16:09
Many Thanks for the web cam. Makes me smile every day! We have been to St John many times and have many memories.. check out the cam at Soggy Dollar Bar too for a double smile.
November 27th, 2009 12:17
Hey, Ruth and Ron! It’s easier getting through times of NO STJ with the STJ Spice Cam then it iswithout it. Thank you a thousand times over!
November 28th, 2009 02:29
I watch the webcam everyday to count down until I can get there. This is by far the best St. John website I can visit. P.S. war eagle
