We think Coral Bay artist Annie Caswell is as fun as she is talented. And she’s super-talented.
Annie got to Coral Bay by way of Vermont and her art can be found all over the island. From painting and sculptures to jewelry and photography and her specialty – making Spirit Dolls. Annie also loves teaching art classes.
And, while she’d just as soon not be known for just her Dip Sign t-shirts, you can’t really escape pop culture.
Annie is also going to be an occasional video contributor. Look for our newest feature, “Annie’s Animals,” next week!
The Starfish Market renovation turned out well, and even with a lot of things being moved around and relocated, it’s surprisingly easy to find what you’re looking for.
But if you get lost, look up. The aisles are all named after bays and beaches. Crackers and cookies in Chocolate Hole. Cereal’s in Cinnamon Bay.
The Morris F. deCastro Clinic next to the Cruz Bay park has a fresh coat of paint. Blue paint. Covering up years of pink.
You won’t find doctors at the clinic, but it is staffed by nurses. A former nurse tells us the clinic gets lots of walk-ins, but unless it’s a very minor medical need, they’ll send you to the big clinic up on Centerline Road.
Mostly, the clinic provides public health services, like immunizations, screenings and family planning. If you step on a sea urchin, they can probably fix you up too. For this kind of emergency, probably not.
We’d much rather write about restaurants opening and let everybody else tell you about restaurants that have closed. But losing The Balcony would really stink.
It looks like we have.
Neighboring Waterfront Bistro – nice place, completely different owners – is using its noggin…posting a sign at The Balcony inviting you to come dine with them instead.
Joe Jackson, who ran a construction business on St. John for years, moved himself and his company name back to New Jersey 10 years ago, where he still does business under the same name.
“People who know St. John always stop me and ask me about the name, and I usually end up getting business out of the conversation,” Joe tells us.
Below, Keith Turner sends us his snow-covered St. John stickers from frosty Cleveland.
There’s an overlook on the way to the East End. Next time, pull over and stop.
You can see across the Sir Francis Drake Channel to the BVI’s to the north. And you can cross the street and see south over Round Bay to Leduck Island. It’s a nice spot!
Do you get messages similar to this when on the North Shore or out at sea?
We finally decided to get some roaming details, at least from our carrier, AT&T.
A phone call connected through a number of carriers, including CCT Boatphone, Cable & Wireless and Digicel will cost you about $3.50 per minute. Sign up for AT&T’s “world traveler” plan, and it will be $1.50 per minute.
A text message is 50 cents. Send a photo and it’s $1.30, no special plan discount.
It’s the surfing that gets really expensive. GPRS data usage is almost $20 per MB, so wait until you’re back in friendlier waters before Googling the name of that mega-yacht you just saw.
