We don’t know if Moe at the real Skinny Legs has an intellectual property case or not, but you can find a new place called Skinny Legs in Bellevue, Kentucky.
On-StJohn.com reader Daniel submits his review. “It’s nowhere near as good as being at the real Skinny Legs in Coral Bay.”
The USVI Department of Tourism bought a lot of exposure at the playoff game in between the Vikings and Cowboys in Minnesota, with eight minutes of advertising time during the game on the Metrodome’s LED signage.
It’s promoting Sun Country Airline’s new, direct flights from Minneapolis to St. Thomas that start January 31.
It’s also giving the 64,000 or so fans at the game a chance to win trips to the U.S. Virgin Islands.
We know at least one local Vikings fan who will be glad to give his homies a hearty welcome. Beach Bar cook Red Hauge calls himself “the loudest, purplest Vikings fan on the island.”
You probably know about the sandy beach on the Rendezvous Bay side of Ditleff Point, but have you ever followed the pebbly shoreline around to the point? There you’ll see some amazing rocks and waves.
Here are some reader photos of how they keep St. John close to their hearts, even in the dead of winter.
Above, Dave and Kathy in South Portland, Maine, with the what’s left of a Boston friend’s kind gift of some St. John Brewers beer.
Below, a snow covered SUV from Jeff in Cincinnati, a frigid-looking Hyundai from Judie and Daniel, also in Cincinnati (note the license plate), Maria and Sam’s frozen Mini in Crystal Lake, Illinois and from Buffalo, New York, David and Jenny’s winterland homage to Woody’s.
Just like a Chia Pet, the new Coral Bay triangle sign is starting to fill in.
Close to a dozen businesses have staked their claim on the big billboard, and artist Cheryl Geller’s “Welcome” arch is now up.
There’s room for 32 signs, and the Moravian Church, which owns the land the sign is on, is selling the billboard space to Coral Bay businesses on a first come, first served basis.
We have no idea if it’s sold out, or close to it -nor are we even sure there are 32 businesses IN Coral Bay – at least that would want a sign that points you to them – but the church’s property manager, Sam Rymer, tells a cute story in an e-mail update to area business owners.
“One day while putting up a couple of signs, a minivan full of tourists drove up and the driver, with a puzzled look on his face, said ‘we’re looking for a place called Skinny Legs,’” he says. “The sign had come down and I was rehanging it, and without saying a word I lifted the sign next to the arrow. They were so amused they asked if they could take a picture of me holding the sign.”
Everybody loved that old collection of signs, but most are reserving reviews of the replacement.
The best quote from a local we could get was “I’ve never seen Coral Bay so organized.”
The Texas Longhorns lost the battle for the national champion crown to Alabama Thursday, but that didn’t dampen the fun at what was probably St. John’s first ever Texas tailgate party.
Cactus on the Blue owners Nile and Courtney, Texas transplants, threw a game day tailgate party and gave away free BBQ and beer to anyone cheering for the Longhorns.
“We were surprised by how many fans, tourists and locals came by to get in on the action and show their support,” says Courtney. “We lost, but we still had a blast.”
Blue Orchid is the name its owners have given Unit 15A at Gallows Point, and after a top to bottom renovation, it is ready for its close-up.
Blue Orchid’s makeover included every square inch of this one-bedroom, one-level unit. It is a high-end unit, but it remains comfy and casual. Blue Orchid is just a few feet from the water and is also the closest unit to the pool and sundeck.
If you’ve never considered the Gallows Point experience, this should convince you to give it a try. Take tour of Blue Orchid, below!
Happy 40th birthday to Chris Burkiewicz, an On-StJohn.com reader in Illinois and a dedicated St. John visitor, according to his wife.
“We come every year, and he is basically obsessed with the island,” Sabrina Burkiewicz says, who sent us Chris’ picture at Hawksnest, his favorite beach. “He gets up every morning and checks the weather on St. John before he checks the weather here.”
Chris isn’t alone in his addiction. What is it about St. John that infects some people so strongly? Tell us your story.
