Spyglass menu: A bit of everything
The new Spyglass restaurant is taking its first menu (click above/below to see bigger) for a test drive with a soft open. There is Mexican (lots of Mexican in Cruz Bay these days), burgers, salads, sandwiches and wraps.
It’s an introductory menu, meaning it is a work in progress. Let them know what you’d like to see.

That rum and coke pulled pork is made out of roast beef?
February 28th, 2010 02:18
A $12 burger? A pulled pork sandwich made of roast beef? You might want to plan a soft, soft opening.
February 28th, 2010 06:27
What a unique menu! Can’t wait to try the Rum and Coke BBQ Pork (although the ingredients say Roast Beef?!). Either way, I’m sure its tasty. I don’t know about the Calamari Nachos…maybe if someone orders them I’ll be adventurous and try a piece.
63 days and counting! “Soon Come” isn’t coming soon enough. Take care you all, Nancie

I have to say this is disappointing. Mexican is not my menu of choice. I doubt I’ll be checking out Spyglass in May afterall.
February 28th, 2010 10:29
Best of luck! I don’t prefer mexican food but, I give anyone credit that is living on St. John and I am here in New Jersey.
Happy Sunday!
February 28th, 2010 11:03
I’m just guessing, but I’m willing to bet that the “beef” was just a typo and is probably fixed by now, don’t you think?
February 28th, 2010 11:55
I bet so to Ruth……a typo!
February 28th, 2010 13:04
Typo or not this menu looks pretty uninspired to me. It’s a shame that someone can’t use that space to it’s full advantage.
February 28th, 2010 16:36
Please people let’s have a little happy optimism, My wife and friends can’t wait to try the new spot when they arrive this week and I for one plan on more than a few cocktails at the very cool view bar. Seafood, mexican and burgers. Add cold beer. No problems.
February 28th, 2010 16:51
I need new glasses… but I thought I saw some tasty sounding foods not related to Mexico. If I were on island I would love to give Spyglass a try… watching the sun go down while casting that glow on the water….
February 28th, 2010 17:18
I guess the other disappointing thing is that it is yet another Mexican venue in Cruz Bay (this makes at least three). I want a lot of Mexican, I go to, ummmmm, Mexico.
February 28th, 2010 18:24
It looks like another restaurant trying to appeal to too broad a clientele. Usually NOT a “recipe” for success. Also, it’s not a good sign when simple spell check is not used and a menu full of typos is circulated, including quesOdilla, quacOmole, ceaser instead of caeser and aoli and not aioli. It’s just BAD!
February 28th, 2010 18:39
Hmmmm…we’ll feel like we never left home. Calamari nachos sound interesting, though.
February 28th, 2010 19:09
That is such a GREAT location that any decent menu will be a treat. Mexican is good, but they have Asian and Indian and Mediteranian tacos? Sounds fantastic! I’ll be there next trip.
I say: Inspired Menu!
February 28th, 2010 20:20
So, to be positive: My suggestion would be to focus on a cuisine or at least cuisines with similarities. Most people do not want Mexican, Asian, Indian and Mediterranean on the same menu. It looks like a menu with an identity crisis and one that will send customers seeking other choices. Also, you cannot have no less than 5 spelling errors on your menu. Looking forward to checking it out in April to see if they took everyone’s advice.

Spelling schmelling…

They could sure use some help with that menu.
Time to bring in Forrest Hall.

More Mexican – no thank you
March 1st, 2010 11:22
I would probably stop in and try something at lunch, but this menu would not be appealing to me in the evening. I would not want a sandwich or a wrap at dinnertime. Also, I have to say that I am not sure about the wisdom of putting cheese on calamari! (though the other accompaniments with it sound good). Good luck to the new owners. It certainly is a great location.

Really, it took some serious lack of thought to add more cheap Mexican food to an area where we already have Cactus on the Blue, Surly Cantina, and the Love City Cantina (Surly imposters). The poor spelling just underlines what everyone else sees. Fine dining worked there; this won’t get anyone to climb the stairs.

I think the island needs a gourmet take out! I know it is possible. We have been enjoying the island for the past 23 years. We had an experience at Caneel, about 5 years ago. We ended up eating surf and turf out of styrofoam containers on the porch of our beachfront room at the Westin. We made reservations for the Equator at Caneel – the food is excellent! but, the waitress forgot to put our dinner order in – the restuarant was closing for the night – we were just being polite thinking that everything is just a bit slower on island time – the Chef at Caneel had to take us back to the Westin since we missed the last taxi to the other side of the island. Well, talk about the best surf and turf we every had! Along with an experience you could never imagine. We have been back to Caneel since with no problems – it must have been a bad night…. I know gourmet works in styrofoam – maybe you can find something just a little more upscale like chinese food takeout platters???

I feel disappointed at thia menu considering the location I was hoping for more traditional dinner fare. This looks more like a lunch menu. Why split the Mexican cuisine lovers between Spyglass and Cactus Blue?.
March 9th, 2010 11:46
like others have stated, Mexican might not be the right fare….but if Wayne Campbell is behind the bar, all is good!
March 9th, 2010 20:57
Mrs. K-prow says Mr K-prow didn’t read the menu! I think it is very diverse and good luck!
March 13th, 2010 09:04
I had a FABULOUS grilled mahi sandwich on Feb 27th, the first day they were open for lunch. More than “cheap Mexican”. Give it a chance. If you’re going to knock it before you’ve tried it, perhaps you would at least have some constructive and concrete suggestions about what you would like to eat at this beautiful location.
April 1st, 2010 20:15
the Spyglass’s biggest asset…Wayne Campbell.
April 6th, 2010 18:41
Does anyone have the email address, website or phone number to spyglass?
April 10th, 2010 07:17
went last night…wonderful views, wonderful food, but no longer a Mexican menu. They had fish, a few beef entrees and pasta. Great apps (few offerings. Killer drinks.
April 19th, 2010 16:05
We went up there to check out their happy hour specials – the bar was empty, and I realized quickly why, not much of a view from the bar in its new position. Whoever decided to move it to maximize the number of 2-top tables on the rail made a really poor choice. The drinks were ok, but the food was substandard. I don’t think we’ll go back again.

Great !!! View of Cruz Bay from the outside bar and Lounge
June 24th, 2010 14:34
Hi, I’m the new manager at spyglass. I would like to send you a copy of our Diner menu to dispell the belief that this is a mexican restaurant and or does not have a dinner menu. I will also send you the revised lunch menu. Thank you, Sara

Great restaurant! My husband and I ordered the Calamari Nachos, rum and coke wings, and the fish tacos. Unfortunately they were out of calamari so they offered shrimp nachos instead. We were not disappointed, the shrimp nachos where AMAZING! Best lunch!

LOVE the Grilled Salmon Salad!!! Great grilled salmon on greens with carmelized cashews and mango vinagarette. Open air restaurant. Georgeous view. True Caribbean atmosphere.
I usually stay on St. Thomas, and take the ferry to St. John just for Spyglass’s Grilled Salmon Salad.
