No more Texaco

No trouble finding the Donald Schnell Studio now!
The last of the demolition of the old Texaco station reveals the very good looking backside of the stone Amore Center, where the Schnell Studio moved to a few years ago. It’s really a fine looking 3-story building. But until now, you’ve probably just driven by without much noticing.
There’s talk of some kind of mini park or sculpture or something in the triangle that used to be Texaco. Got any ideas?

With all the talented artists on island I’m sure some kind of sculpture could be made. Perhaps they could all contribute a piece of their own median (glass, ceramic, paint, fabric, etc.). Or use recycled parts from the Texaco station!

How about a Tiki Hut Bar so we can watch the traffic going round and round..
That would be fun.

For the sculpture/park… how about a Rockefeller statue with benches, or maybe some Carib and/or Arawak Indians surounded with a native Lignum Vitae tree or two, along with maybe a Royal Poinsettia trees?

How about a direction sign with hard to discern arrows and lots of small signs like in Coral Bay. THEN we’d have some REAL confusion! Beeeeeeeep!

sherrie stole my idea…I was thinking a parade viewing area to watch the show in the circle.

That is such a crazy intersection for tourists! It needs a nice sign showing which way to go to get where you need to go!
Left to Coral Bay, Center Line, hospital
Right to Westin, South Shore, Starfish Market
Throw in some palm trees too!

Colleen, there is no right anymore, that is the essential rule of the roundabout: NO right turns, just left and next left.

Probably goes without saying, if any statue would go there it would have to be the Flying Pegasus…..Texaco before the star…..maybe it could point the way to various places from the ‘Round-a-bout”….

I think a sculpture of a giant Iguana
would do nicely.

Be careful…that first step from the second floor looks like a doozey…
Sure hope they don’t paint over that nice stone wall.

Back in the ’60′s when steel bands played whatever venues there were (Caneel, Cinnamon, etc.)there was a very popular pan player named Shorty. He worked at the Texaco at that time. How about showing some recognition for his contribution to STJ as things used to be?

Love the idea(s) of the Tiki Hut bar and bleachers. When there’s no live music, there should be a continuous loop of the Jeep Cam theme.

I think a statue of Captain John Brandi would be very nice.

I have a wonderful idea! I like the Rockefeller statue with benches BUT make it that much more special. Make it a fundraiser for the less fortunate on the island. Sell engraved pavers (like Disneyworld). Have a local craftsman design circle/round pavers to represent the roundabout. Sell each paver for $25. The purchaser will have a choice of design and then a limited amount of wording. I would be the first in line! We have two pavers in Disneyworld – a little momento of our journeys. If you would like, I can forward a photo of our Disney pavers. We also have a certificate and lucite plaques of them. I know in Disney we had several options of the engraving – The Year “1998″, Wedding Bells, Birthday Cake, Mickey Mouse Ears etc. Man, do I have ideas. This would also work in town square by the ferry dock. Ruth, right outside your door. Happy Monday!

Would love to see sculptures of St John characters who are gone but remain icons of that free spirit lifestyle that was so embedded in our memories. Lindy overlooking his beloved Cruz Bay, Doris Jadan fltting around town on her golf cart with a hibiscus flower in her hair, John Gibney with his Tarzan Bar, You get the idea.

I thought Pgasus was Mobil?
Anyway, although I’d be a bit tentative to sit, and probably couldn’t relax in a park proper next to this traffic hub, it seriously should be something green there. Some flowers and maybe a palm or two. Too much pavement and man made structures, regardless of how nice, are not always good. Dedicate the garden with a small sign to someone, maybe Mr. Rockefeller, in gratitude for this verdant rock.

A statute of Mr. Rockefeller, who should be recognized, would be more fitting by the NPS Visitors Center. Let’s keep this area as green as possible. However I do like the idea of recognizing “Shorty”. Never saw him without a smile!

A big tree. To replace the other(s) in town that have disappeared.

Public restrooms so we can all stop sneaking into Woody’s.

I still think it is going to be the left turn lane from Centerline. A practical transportation use of space. I bet we could find the easy way – just stop by and ask one of the road workers….I now have an excuse to go into town!

We need a big neon “Texaco” sign there so we can still tell people to veer left or right at “The Texaco”. It could become a landmark like the “Citco” sign outside Fenway Park in Boston.
