Dumpster upgrades

The crumbling Chocolate Hole/Great Cruz Bay dumpster parking pad has probably claimed more than one rental Jeep.
And now it’s getting fixed up.
Here’s a sneak peak at something else that goes on here. It is one of the ACC’s busiest feral cat feeding stations. New steps will make it easier for volunteers to lug up the hundreds of pounds of cat food it goes through every year.
Bon Appetit, you freeloaders.

Why in the world would anyone feed feral cats?

I have a friend in MD that feeds the feral cats, catches them, neuters/spays them and then releases them back into their colony. It seems like a losing battle but it has actually made a difference!

On St John, the Animal Care Center picks up feral “bush cats” and spays or neuters them before releasing them. Volunteers suppy the the 35 or so feeding stations on island with food and water – a humane action in my opinion.

A huge thank you to Danny for fixing the scary dumpster hole!

My friend in MA is part of a feral cat program. They first have spotters, then the feeders, then the trappers and off to be neutered or spayed. My friend is then an adoptive mom retraining lost family pets which is a fairly quick process. However, for the truly feral ones, it takes weeks of incredible patience to ‘humanize’ them. I was with her for 3 months while Ms Lily went from a true scaredy cat to her alpha pet in her home. Lily survived being born in the wild in a MA winter before being found. She made no noise, wouldn’t come to a human and had more hiding places than you can imagine. Now she is a delightful pet. The feeding stations are better than folks having a cat for a pet, leave island and take it to Trunk Bay and leave it to fend for itself. The ACC does fantastic work…contact them to buy raffle tickets for their upcoming Wagapalooza!!!

KUDOS to the Animal Care Center! Does anyone have a contact name or number I can have when I am there in a couple of months? I’d like to help if I can.
Nice job fixing the hole, too!

There is a list of needs on the website. I plan to call to volunteer when we are there in August, too. Will be great for my kids to do as well. Such a great organization!
And I am SO glad they are fixing the hole- my rental jeep has almost been “eaten” several times….

The ACC has put a HUGE dent in the feral cat population. I would assume that all of the feeding stations is to keep them out of the dumpsters. They spread trash and disease if they have to go in there for food. When you are here next, notice the cats wandering around…if they have a clipped ear, they’ve been spayed/neutered by the ACC and released back where they were found.
You can donate to this awesome organization here: http://www.stjohnanimalcarecenter.com/ They take donations right on their site (click the Help the ACC tab).

I too plan to visit them when I’m on island in 25 days. Always been an animal lover and I respect anyone who dedicates their life to helping them.

My daughter and I, missing our izshabooboo, stopped by for our morning walk and picked up two dogs. You don’t need any i.d. or anything. A real live pirate answered the door! Just make sure your collars are secure-one of the dogs got loose and TOOK OFF! Thankfully, she ran right back to ACC. Also, you need more than three doggie bags for two dogs!!!!

I always stop to give meet scraps to the kitties at that station.
The feral cat colonies are comprised of spayed/neutered cats. Looked for docked ears to know who is fixed.
