Is it just us, or does this building seem like it keeps getting bigger? More forms up for another pour, and judging by the roof line we think it is going to be a PF Chang’s. Annie’s Animals: Westin IguanasWednesday, April 14th, 2010The Westin gardens and grounds are beautiful and well groomed, and the resort’s iguana population certainly enjoys it. Westin guests, for the most part, enjoy them too. Today, Annie Caswell treats a few Westin iguanas to a mid-afternoon snack! Nice St. John photo journalTuesday, April 13th, 2010Here is a very nice collection of St. John photos, as seen through the eyes of a first time visitor. Writer Lesley Bardsley, from Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, put the online journal together to jump-start her ambitions for her own Webzine. But she also has St. John fantasies. “I’d love to fix up my Subaru Forester, ship it to St. John, live in Coral Bay and be a colorful freelance crazy woman with camera and laptop,” Leslie says. “Local color shots? Casual portraits? A wacky newspaper column? A knitting shop? And when I could tear myself away from the beaches, I’d volunteer at the Animal Care Center.” Check out Leslie’s St. John photo journal, here! Kinder, gentler smoking ban: Discuss?Monday, April 12th, 2010
Those ashtrays may not be ready for retirement yet. The latest version of the public smoking ban to work its way toward a full Senate vote lifts some of the more aggressive restrictions, most specifically allowing smoking at bars and restaurants’ outdoor spaces, presumably patios, balconies and the like. It still bans all indoor smoking, but would allow smoking on the beach, in the park and other places banned under the original proposal. Does this sound more like a compromise both sides can live with? Villa video: Beach Garden VillaSunday, April 11th, 2010Like a lot of folks in Chocolate Hole, we watched with great curiosity from a distance as Beach Garden Villa was being built. When we finally got a chance to meet the owners and see the villa first hand, we were blown away. Take a look at one of the South Shore’s coolest villas, below! Yacht spotting: Sea CloudFriday, April 9th, 2010This beautiful tall ship is named Sea Cloud, and Conde Nast Traveler’s February issue calls Sea Cloud the world’s best small cruise ship. Sea Cloud was built for E. F. Hutton in 1931. These days Sea Cloud sails the Caribbean and Mediterranean, pampering passengers who pay as much as $10,000 a week. Take a look at Sea Cloud, off Jost van Dyke below, for free! The clock works againThursday, April 8th, 2010
The fancy Omega clock that hangs at the ferry dock is keeping track of time again. It hasn’t worked for at least two years, but suddenly it is! This is the same clock that can’t be seen by people departing, for whom it might be helpful (you buy tickets inside now), but arriving passengers know what time they land. PS: It’s two minutes fast. Dumpster upgradesWednesday, April 7th, 2010
The crumbling Chocolate Hole/Great Cruz Bay dumpster parking pad has probably claimed more than one rental Jeep. And now it’s getting fixed up. Here’s a sneak peak at something else that goes on here. It is one of the ACC’s busiest feral cat feeding stations. New steps will make it easier for volunteers to lug up the hundreds of pounds of cat food it goes through every year. Bon Appetit, you freeloaders.
Fish Bay plant trailTuesday, April 6th, 2010The native plant garden trail in Fish Bay has been there for awhile now, but it still looks very much like a work in progress. We wouldn’t suggest going out of your way to make this stop, but if you’re in the Fish Bay area and see the sign, take the short walk around the little trail. The site, paid for in part by a grant from the VI Department of Agriculture’s Urban and Community Forestry program, is intended to showcase the trees, bushes and other plants native to St. John. Even if you never get there in person, take a virtual look, below! The big UNOP reveal, Part 1Monday, April 5th, 2010
A bit of Peter Bay in Cruz Bay. One day the UNOP Building (Unknown Name or Purpose) got concrete. The next day the forms came down. That is one formidable tower hovering there right on top of the sidewalk. Some stonework on the UNOP Building next maybe?
Annie’s Animals: The CrabmonFriday, April 2nd, 2010Ted Scheer, better known as The Crabmon, is a busy guy. He stages weekly crab races, to the delight of kids and adults alike, every Sunday at the Westin, and he takes his crabs and show on the road for private events too. Annie takes us on a crab recruiting run with Ted, and to the Westin on a recent Sunday for races, below! |
