That railing should save some vacationers from wishing they would’ve elected the comprehensive vehicle damage coverage. Our Newest Advertiser: Kaleidoscope VillaSunday, May 30th, 2010This is the very first vacation villa available on Ditleff Point, and we are amazed by the creativity owners are putting into new villas that are coming on the market. Kaleidoscope Villa, a four bedroom, gated manse, is right up there. This place has lots of toys, like the wireless remote that controls everything from the lower level hot tub to a waterfall to the pool’s light show. But today, we’ll just show you Kaleidoscope’s views, from Fish Bay to Rendezvous Bay and beyond. The views run without a remote. Amazing. Check out Kaleidoscope Villa, below! The Roundabout in 40 secondsSaturday, May 29th, 2010Just about everybody we’ve asked agrees: The new roundabout is WAY better than the old intersection. And most everybody has caught on to how it works too. See how well it works for yourself, below! St. John Brewers to Maine, New HampshireFriday, May 28th, 2010
The St. John Brewers beer guys are planting more stateside flags, expanding their presence in New England. Starting June 1, Virgin Islands Tropical Mango and Island Hoppin’, their current flagship beers, will be available in Maine and New Hampshire. And if you live in either state, you have a chance to meet Kevin and Cheech at launch parties next month. Check out the bars and dates here. “We get a lot of requests for our brews from visitors that live in these two states, and with our presence in Massachusetts and Rhode Island it seemed natural,” Cheech tells us. “Be forewarned, we’re coming after you next in Vermont and Connecticut.” Maine’s not uncharted territory for these guys. Their bottler, Shipyard Brewing Co., is based in Portland, and they visit several times a year. Their beer empire now covers 7 states, one territory, 1 Commonwealth (Puerto Rico) and 1 island nation (the BVIs). And if you live in Maine, they’ll be on Good Day Maine, Fox 23, next Friday morning. “It should be an interesting interview after four straight nights of launch parties!” says Cheech. (We’ll get a copy and post it.) Parrothead Pam’s rideThursday, May 27th, 2010
Don’t let this clunker’s looks fool you. It’s a workaday vehicle for its owner, known by her nickname, ParrotHead Pam. The truck is covered with Jimmy Buffet and island-themed stickers, as well as some more recent additions proclaiming her new love of God and church. “It was the lure of the Jimmy Buffet lifestyle that brought me to St. John 12 years ago,” Pam, a super cool lady, recently told us. “But my life has changed since then. I used to follow Jimmy, and now I follow Jesus.” As for that nickname, she says “Oh, I’m happy to keep it. JesusHead doesn’t really work.”
Wagapalooza raises $22,000Wednesday, May 26th, 2010The St. John Animal Care Center will net about $22,000 from this year’s Wagapalooza dog show, slightly less than last year. But this year’s turnout was much better. “We brought in a little less from raffle tickets and t-shirt sales, but the crowd was definitely larger,” says the ACC’s Diana Ripley. “It looked like everybody was having a lot of fun and it was a great chance for folks to take their dogs out in public and let them socialize. Dog owners don’t get a chance to do that here that much.” Take a look at some of the fun, and meet the winners of some of the categories, below! Safe Boating Day: The helicopter rescueTuesday, May 25th, 2010Spectators, and there were lots of them!, got to watch a Coast Guard HH-65 Dolphin helicopter demonstrate a sea rescue Saturday as part of Safe Boating Day in Cruz Bay. You’ll see the helicopter come in, drop a victim (a dummy), a rescuer go down, followed by a stretcher, the stretcher brought back up with the victim and finally the rescuer retrieved. You’ll also see the USCGC Reef Shark. We’ll introduce you to the captain, one of only a handful of female captains in the Coast Guard, and see the ship later. What made this otherwise routine demonstration fun to watch was the fact that it was happening against the unusual backdrop of Cruz Bay. Helicopter rescue, below! Event chases off frustrated boatersMonday, May 24th, 2010
Safe Boating Day in Cruz Bay Saturday drew a lot of people, but it also chased away a few. Above, a very empty Cruz Bay. Boat owners moored in Cruz Bay found notices stuck to their boats Friday, giving them less than 24 hours’ notice that they would have to move their boats or face fines. That left boat owners scrambling to get their boats moved, either to Caneel Bay where mooring fees were waved for the day, or to Great Cruz Bay, where temporary anchoring was allowed. Other than that angst, Safe Boating Day was pretty cool. We’ll show you a helicopter water rescue and take you on a tour of the Coast Guard cutter Reef Shark later this week.
Roundabout primer: Don’t do thisSaturday, May 22nd, 2010Call of the wild: Red heads to AlaskaFriday, May 21st, 2010
Thursday was Beach Bar kitchen manager Red Hauge’s last day. Red is off to take on head chef duties at the Royal Wolf Lodge, an exclusive fishing lodge in the middle of Alaska’s Katmai National Park. Red, who has done fine dining most of his career, including time at Asolare and the old Chloe and Bernards, came to the Beach Bar about a year and a half ago, and says it’s time for a change again. “I’ve had fun on St. John and enjoyed it here at the Beach Bar, but there’s more to life than cheeseburgers for me,” says Red. “Alaska is someplace I’ve never been. I feel like I’m moving from one paradise to another.” Red will be in charge of breakfasts for guests, lunch for the fishing trips and meals for evening reception. Anything else he’s looking forward to? “I’m going to learn how to fly fish.” Wagapalooza, Saturday!Thursday, May 20th, 2010
