Mystery parrot in Coral Bay

Coral Bay resident Tory Lane has a new daily visitor and he’s worried it is lost.
“I woke up one morning last week to a bird making noise outside, and when I looked, there was this parrot sitting in my tree,” says Tory. “I cut up some papaya and it was so friendly it came right over to me to get some breakfast.”
Tory says the parrot’s wings are not clipped and there is no identifying band on its leg, but he’s sure it is somebody’s pet. It hangs out around Tory’s house during the day, disappears just before dark, and has been coming back every morning.
Tory would like to find the parrot a home, or return it to where it belongs, but only on one condition…that it’s wings don’t get clipped.
“The coolest thing in the world is to be able to fly and I’m not taking that away from him,” he says.

That is a Rainbow Lorikeet. Parrots often have ID implants so if it can be captured a vet might be able to track down the registered owner.

Seems to me like he has already found a home! They live in the wild here just fine and with you as a friend he should be happy as can be!

He’s wild – at least he was until he began being hand fed.

Beautiful bird! Wondering if it’s a baby or a youngster. Tory, can you keep it safe during the storm somehow? Maybe s/he is meant to be your delightful friend
Enjoy and stay safe.

Tory – you have a Green-naped Lorie. I found it here: http://www.avianweb.com/greennapedlories.html
I remember these birds in Australia, where at dusk they would gather in huge flocks in the nearby trees and squawk (very loudly) until full dark. They’re very social, and since he’s alone, is probably very grateful for your company. Also, even in captivity, they need lots of flight distance! Maybe he could follow you by air when you do your next swim around the island….

Holy Cow! Looks like the dinghy dock is almost torn off and the dinghys have “sunk”! I’m praying the island doesn’t sustain much more damage than this…

Hi! While reading a post on Travel Talk Forum I noticed a topic about a missing bird and forwarded this article to them.
The response I recieved was:
Just read the article about your lost parrot… might want to tell them that even if the parrot doesn’t have any identifying marks, if it is indeed a captive pet there’s a good chance it may have been marked electronically. In order to bring our parrot ‘Lucky’ across borders internationally, they wanted something more permanent than something removable to identify her, so she has a tiny microchip in her chest that is easily picked up by anyone with an electronic reader, similar to a bar code reader. That number will instantly bring up her nationality, residence, contact info, etc.
Might be worth having it checked out if you want to find the birds owner. Good luck
Don’t know if this is helpful but I figured I would share it.

I believe they have these birds at Coral World on St. Thomas (on the east end of the island). Maybe he or she hopped a ferry to St. John:)) That’s a little bit far to fly (although it might be possible).
