Earl’s aftermath: Chocolate Hole
Very few boats in Chocolate Hole survived Hurricane Earl’s visit Monday, although the Pond Bay Club buildings were unscathed.
Here is video, from Capt. John, shot Tuesday, the morning after Earl.

Unbelievable!! Those poor boat owners! I wonder what they are going to do with all the beached boats and debris??? All on island time too!
I’ll be staying right on Chocolate Hole shoreline in exactly 1 month. Should be an interesting view!!
Stay away Gaston!!!

So sad to see an empty Chocolate Hole on the Serendipity cam… This may be a stupid question…does Hurricane Hole really offer better protection for boats against big storms…or would that be just an island tale?

Absolutely heartbreaking.

Truly sorry for all the loss of property… glad to know that current building practices seem to be producing sound structures on St John. Thanks to Capt. John for these two real time videos… sending caring thoughts to all in the islands.

How devastating! I feel so sad for the owners of those boats. SteveV mentioned Hurricane Hole. I had been wondering the same thing.

My heart truly goes out to the owners of these boats. I wish you all a very safe remainder of the season. Thanks Capt’n John for taking the time to keep in touch with the place we hold close to our hearts and minds. Be safe!

A tearful video. The first galley you filmed is, indeed, the Cheoy Lee ketch i wrote you about. It is devestating. She survived so much in her lifetime (thank you, Gary Moses). Thank you for taking the time to air this. My heart is broken for Windsong and for the other mariners.

Concerning Hurricane Hole, the owner of the Chocolate Hole villa that we are staying at in Oct. took his 49′ sailboat over to Hurricane Hole before the storm. He reported that the boat was safe with no damage.

Although this saddens me, I am very grateful no lives were lost. This Really could have been so much worse.

I agree with Laurie: The boats look so sad washed up and careened as they are, but they are only things and in time will be repaired or replaced. The fact that lives were not lost is something to be grateful for. StJ has recovered from worse and shall again.
