Fatty Crab’s menu

Fatty Crab officially opened for business Thursday night.

Appetizers from $9, and main dishes from $14 to $42. (And the dreaded “market price” for the Spiny Lobster in chili gravy with Baked in the Sun sourdough…but that sounds good enough to take the blind plunge.) Josephine’s greens also make the menu, as does roti.  The menu’s got a local nod.

If you haven’t been among the the first to try it, here are the menus! Click to enlarge.

Fatty Crab will be different. “This place won’t be ‘upscale’ (expensive) anymore,” Skurnik said. “We’re going against island-type,” he added.

According to News of STJ, those are the words of one of the owners. Their prices belie those words.

$42 sirloin steak? $17 chicken satay? $10 for pickles? Yikes.

It all sounds delish but I’ll be eating Josephine’s greens, steak and coconut rice in my bathing suite on the villa patio watching the sunset and saving my $$ for a day trip to the BVI’s!

I’m sure they’ll do very well with the right crowd~

YIKES. I do not mind paying for a fabulous meal but $42 for a sirloin steak? Even for STJ that is insane.
I will pass…Zozo’s stays on my fine dining meal out spot.

Those really are outrageous prices–even for Cruz Bay! Good luck, tho.

We went to Fatty Crabs on Friday and thought it was fantastic. We have visited all the restaurants on STJ many times but there is nothing like this. The decor was fun and inviting. The waitstaff was friendly and attentive. The food was different from any STJ restaurant–Malaysian Tapas–and it was delicious. The deserts were also outstanding. The wine list had good variety and the prices were reasonable.

This is a restaurant we will go to many times.

A unique and welcome change to the fine-dining spots on St.John, and lots of fun, too! My favorites were the Watermelon Pickles with Crispy Pork (Yum!), and the Coconut Panecotta dessert (double Yum!). Can’t wait to go back……

We ate there last night. The prices seem high but the dishes are meant to be shared. We ordered bottled water (ugh Boston habit), two cocktails, five dishes (we probably should have only chosen three), and a bottle of wine. Tab: $150. It costs more than that for us to eat out at home.

But, I agree with Bert, where is the chili crab??

Okay, I get it. It’s a place you go to and can expect to pay $150.00 for dinner for two. I’m fine with that, knowing it, up front. For some reason (an interview with the owner) I thought this would be different.

No matter. Good luck to them.

I certainly got the impression that it was going to be on a different scale than it seems to be. It crossed my mind that maybe these would be moderate prices in New York, so I went to their website to see what the NYC restaurants’ prices were like:

    http://www.fattycrab.com/menus/

I was really quite surprised (really) to see that the prices are HIGHER on STJ than in Manhattan. More expensive on STJ than in Manhattan.

Nasi Goreng on the Upper West side: $21. On STJ: $23.
Watermelon Pickle and Crispy Pork in NY: $17. On STJ: $23
Chicken Satay in NY: $14. On STJ: $17.

    jimn:

The only thing cheaper on STJ than Manhattan is Rum. It does not surprise me that the menu prices are higher on STJ. Just about everything has to be flown in or brought in by a slow boat. I would hope that the restaurant would use some locally caught seafood when available and offer menu specials when they have the chance to get their hands on some local Tuna, Mahi or Wahoo. Maybe even the occasional local Spiny Lobster.

It is difficult for local restaurant to feature local fish because of the sporadic supple, but when they can they should always buy/sell local products instead of bringing them in from all over the world.

I look forward to trying out Fatty Crab on STJ, I have not had the chance yet.

I would hate to see what expensive is.

Hey friends, I was a l title bit quoted out of context. What I said was that our cuisine, vibe, and approach to food, beverage, wines, etc was intended to be more in keeping with the fact that in St John, it is routinely 85 degrees F and 80% humidity, and that Fatty Crabs cuisine and drink menu was intended to be more harmoniously matched to the environment, as opposed to the average menu offering of the typical upscale ST John establishment. I never said Fatty would be a downscale establishment. We have spent a small fortune bringing this joint to life on our beloved isle, we hope you like it, and will join us in a celebration of life in the USVI.

I think it’s fair to say that every review of someone that ACTUALLY dined there had a wonderful experience. Yes openig a restaurant ( in this economy) is a feat, I think Fatty Crab is just what Cruz Bay needed!. I agree 42.00 for a steak might ‘seem” outrageous but if you actually try the steak you will see thay you could literaaly cut it with your spoon!!!! Either your a foodie that enjoys a GREAT meal in a cool atmosphere or your cheap and would rather eat crap food. Go to Larry’s if you want a 10.00 meal or kick kit it and treat your self to an experience!!!!

    impressions from opening night:

very warm greeting from jenny indeed, seated immediately. champagne
chilled and poured by partner guy, along with some fatty history.
charming young waitress who really has done her homework. knows the
menu inside and out, very helpful.

love the way the dishes arrive as done, piping hot.
crispy shrimp came first. perfectly cooked, super crispy and delicately
coated rather then heavy. SOOOO glad the great hot sauce as on the side
so grandma could partake. she’a a spice-o-phobe so nervous all night.

basi goreng next. squeeze of lime and the flavor riot begins. lovely,
complex, up, down, side to side on the palate. gram loved it naked, we
    loved it slathered with sambal.

BBQ noodles next. too funky for gram bur dylan and i blasted through
    them.

sliders went down in front of dylan (5.5 years) and we let him be. i
took a bit of each and they are great. soft and flavorful. dylan took
    care of the rest.

chicken satay landed next. again a riot of flavor with a sneaky spice
that creeped up on gram and had her pounding the bubbly.

lastly was eggplant roti. gram loved the naan and janet and i cleaned
    up the rest.

service was ever so slightly choppy, drinks especially. had martini and
a couple of glasses of temp rose and a gruner.

since hearing of fatty on SJ i’ve been wondering where the crab will
come from…….now i know! heard many others asking too.

funny- dylan’s favorite food is crab so we’ve been winding him up all
week, a little tricky to start the evening.
    this summer:

great meal. would have made another table if not for gram. too
contemporary for her in the end.

I’m sure the upscale tourists will love it! After all there are some who would look down their noses at Woody’s Shark Bites, Josephine’s salads or even all you can eat shrimp at Lime Inn. May they enjoy for many years to come.

If the locals don’t come, doesn’t matter what the tourist’s do. After 15 years of watching restaurants come and go… when the locals recommend a place to eat… it is go or no go!
BTW, pooter. low blow on the cheap and crap comment. Folks in St John are doin the best there is. Everyone wants to have a good time. Lighten up!

From Tortola guests- “It was perfect from beginning to end, starting with a delicious Margarita and nice wines accompanied by your mouth-watering and innovative plates. It was absolutely delicious. Fatty Crab is really a wonderful restaurant, just right in time. We are sure it will be a huge success in St.John. Your staff is absolutely outstanding, no comparison with other establishments on St.John. Or elsewhere for that matter. You have really started so successfully. Just keep going.  If it wasn’t for the terribly un-accommodating ferries, and the immigrations laws, we should love to come at least once a week. We will bring our Norwegian guests in mid March.”

We ate there tonight. What a huge disappointment. Salt & pepper calamari was extremely salty. My pork ribs were undercooked and chewy. Anyone worth their salt in the kitchen knows that pork ribs need to be brought to a certain temp and maintained for thirty minutes in order for the collagen and connective tissue to melt. These ribs were disgusting and that is coming from a guy that will eat anything. Service was fantastic though we were the only table in the place.
