On a budget? Try Fatty Crab at a discount
Fatty Crab’s first few months – they opened in February – have been a success by all measures, except maybe one.
The price of entry has been too high for some to consider. The trade off, say that who’ve sampled the food, is you get what you pay for. Most reviews have been very flattering.
Now you can sample what’s getting those rave reviews at a discount: A happy hour menu.
“We’ve been serving a late night menu with smaller specialty dishes that aren’t on our regular menu, like Fatty Sliders and our house made Bahn Mi sausage,” says Fatty’s Jenny Grondin. “We decided we’d offer these specials from 5 to 7 p.m. everyday too, and we’re discounting bottles of wine by 20 percent as well.”
Happy hour food menu, 8 to 12 bucks.
And if that’s still a problem for your budget, say so. They’re listening.
“Every night, we talk to just about every table, and the feedback is very important to us,” Jenny says.
That said, there is a place to eat for every taste and budget on St. John, even very inexpensive ones. Jenny’s favorite cheap spot?
“Nella’s Place, across from the BVI ferry. The best chicken wings on St. John,” she says.

If they are listening can you find out if they plan to close for slow season?
We’d love to try it and we don’t normally care about discounts on vacation

I’m sorry a glass of Merlot for $12 during “Happy Hour” is not very “happy” and $5.00 “Happy Hour” beer – seriously???? I’ll go to Woody’s for $1.00 beer during happy hour thank you very much, and would “crispy fingerling potatoes” at $8.00 be a plate of “french fries” I know, I know I sound harsh but they did ask
I will apologize if I am reading this incorrectly.

When we come down we never look at the menu prices before we walk in to a place. The expense is just part of the experience.
But I’ll have to agree with Pia on this one. How much is that glass of Merlot regularly? It’s like getting a discounted room rate at the Ritz Carlton.

Agreeing with Pia. Not much of a Happy Hour! Plus, having tried their food I find that the comparable places around STJ offer better quality at better prices. Sorry! Also, I’d just rather support locally owned businesses, and this one is a corporation out of NYC.

The top secret place on St. John for the absolute best deals on breakfast and lunch is……drumroll please…… the hospital cafeteria. They even have lunch specials of West Indian food occasionally. Hands down the cheapest breakfast / lunch on island. Hope I didn’t let a cat out of the bag here… don;t everyone go at once… you might overwhelm the single chef.

Well, I think I’m going to give the Happy Hour a try, mainly because when I walk by that place in the afternoon it smells heavenly.

I looked up “tres Palacios Merlot’ and it seems to sell for $12.47 a 750 ml bottle.

Seriously, Schaeffer’s for $3 during HH? and included in the cocktails for $8. It has to be a joke, in Texas you can buy a case of Schaeffer’s for $8 any day of the week….at any time!
May 10th, 2011 23:53
whoops! excuse me the Schaeffer cocktails are $6 during HH!

It’s only $8.99 per bottle in Jersey

problem here folks…
….make your comparisons with another St John establishment with similar quality and quantity of food and drink.
That Texas or Jersey glass of beer costs an airplane ride’s price plus overnight accomidations price to enjoy it here (and “here” is what counts.)
I’d pay $10 for the “gruyere cheese drizzled french fries” that Ocean Grill used to offer, no matter what they are called, and I’d drive all the way from Coral Bay at night.
Now the question is..”is the food at Fatty Crab that good?” (discounted or not).

Just back and had drinks and dinner at Fatt Crab on Monday. We popped in to check it out and after one drink and one appetizer stuck around for the evening. Wow. We own a restaurant in Virginia that does all of its baking, pickles and meats in house. This was a step up. The flavors were intense, ingredients ultra fresh and the preparations imaginative. The price points were reasonable for what we got. We love La Plancha del Mar and La Tapa, and this is another entry at the same tier. Definitely worth the drive from Coral Bay. We’ll be back in November.
That $13 glass of Merlot? Take a look at the price for the same product at another restaurant? Can’t, its exclusive to Fatty Crab. My Dark & Stormy was pricier than down the street, but it was made with all house made ingredients and served in a glass. We’ll still be hitting Quiet Mon and the Beach Bar, but Fatty Crab is a treat.

Went there last night and the food was amazing. Best meal on this side of St John. The staff was awesome too! The pulled pork is out of this world.
