Today’s Lunch of the Week is a Skinny Legs hot dog.
Skinny Legs is famous for its burgers and Mahi sandwiches, but it also has one of the best hot dogs on the island on its menu.
It doesn’t get more basic than that. A National Deli all-beef frank, grilled and served with chips, not fries, and a kosher pickle, $5. Add homemade chili and it’s $7.
St. John Spice Ruth updates Cruz Bay park construction work with a picture that shows about half the park’s brickwork done as of Wednesday. (Click to enlarge.)
Ruth has a theory. They’re going to get as much of this done as they can, cordon off the center of the park (where the statue is) with another fence and stash everything that’s left inside of that, and take the outer fence down in time for the parade.
That would work. Or…they could just work really hard and wrap it up. Odds anyone?
The Friends of the Virgin Islands National Park is sponsoring six eco-camps for kids in July, the first of which is coming up soon, but others are spread throughout next month.
Ranger-in-Training Camp, led by the National Park Service, is for 13 to 16 year olds, and gives them a look at the everyday life and work of park rangers. It’s a 5 day camp starting July 5.
There are also 3 day camps for 7 to 12 year olds that cover everything from how run-off from the hillsides effects coraal reefs to hiking and even a learn to swim camp.
Late in July is a 5 day camp for 13 to 16 year olds that focuses on natural science, and lets the campers work side by side with research scientists.
The camps are all FREE for VI resident kids, but they’re open to visitors too. For visitors, the camps are $100 a day, meals and lodging in cabins at VIERS included.
Here’s a first look at the new pavers around Cruz Bay Park. A small portion of the fence near the Pavilion came down Sunday, showing off the fancy brickwork.
It’s not finished yet, but that’s a pretty good start. Just in time for the Food Fair.
At Starfish Market, dozens of packages of what appear to be big chunks of deli-style roast beef and big chunks of cheese.
Is this a way to make the best of deli scraps? Or is it something actually prepared for this purpose?
Maybe it’s a big seller, but popping big chunks of deli roast beef in your mouth, the kind meant to be run through the thin slicer, sounds kinda strange.
If it’s your thing, look for it. $5.98 a pound for cheese and beef chunks.
We’ve pulled some top level strings and gotten Ruth press credentials to report from the front line as an embedded reporter with the troops on the ground.
Here’s the latest, first hand look at Cruz Bay Park renovations. July 4 parade 10 days away. Will they make it? You be the judge.
Island Blues owner Jeff Hayes says the restaurant and music venue is not for sale, and they haven’t lost their lease.
Jeff, a Raleigh transplant who bought Island Blues with his wife Joan almost exactly three years ago, blames the summer rumor mill for reports of their business closing.
The place is as popular as ever for music. Jeff says Shane Meade takes stage tonight from 7-10 doing pop rock classics. The Savi Fernandez Trio is scheduled for July 7.
Today’s lunch at Spyglass Restaurant is a warm spinach salad, with applewood smoked bacon, red onion, mushrooms, walnuts, Gorgonzola and a maple vinaigrette, $15. Add chicken for an additional $6.
And a blackened Mahi sandwich. Grilled, local Mahi, topped with mango chutney, $15.
The very best thing on the menu at Spyglass is the view. And that is free.
The big news last week was JetBlue Airways’ announcement that it was adding seasonal nonstop service from Boston to St. Thomas (though the return flight does stop in San Juan on the way back.)
That news begs the question: Is JetBlue eying other East Coast nonstops to St. Thomas?
“We are looking at other East Coast service to the USVI and are reviewing service from New York,” JetBlue spokesman Mateo Lleras tells us. “The Washington market is definitely very, very important to us, but we currently have no plans to serve the USVI from there.”
Here’s your chance to try to change JetBlue’s mind. Dulles or BWI to St. Thomas would rock! (DCA, not a chance.) Leave a comment. We’ll make sure the airline gets them.
By the way, JetBlue also announced daily service from St. Thomas to San Juan, and daily service from San Juan to St. Croix.
JetBlue Boston service details:
-Five days a week starting 12/11/2011
-Depart Boston 9:35 a.m., arrive St. Thomas 2:30 p.m.
-Depart St. Thomas 3:20 p.m., arrive Boston 7:29 p.m. (stops in San Juan.)
