Say hello to Fatty Crab bartender Jaime Wong, serving up the drink the New York Times called one of a “wave of cool drinks” in Sunday’s Travel section.
This cucumber-based cocktail is called the Love City, and was one of four drinks the Times featured.
“The name was inspired by St. John’s nickname, and it was created by Fatty Crew’s mixologist Adam Schuman,” says Fatty Crab’s Jenny Grondin. “It’s refreshing with a little spice, and the love comes into play in the muddling of the fresh ingredients.”
The Love City: Gin or vodka, cucumber, Thai basil, house made cardamom syrup and lemon.

Gifft Hill School students and teachers were busy last week on their second annual GHS Gives Back day, tackling more than a dozen volunteer projects. One project shows that a few kids and a couple of shovels can accomplish something a government bureaucracy can’t.
They planted one of the bare-naked planters in Cruz Bay Park.
Today’s Painkiller is served up by a cheerful Julietta at Juju’s Place at Sputnik in Coral Bay (where there is a new cook in the kitchen and a new menu, but more on that later.)
Julietta’s Painkiller is a precise blend: 3 ounces Brugal rum from the Dominican Republic, 2 ounces pineapple juice, 3 ounces Coco Lopez and 1.5 ounces orange juice. Shake, sprinkle with nutmeg, serve over ice with a Brugal Rum floater. No fancy fruit garnish. That’s for city folks back in Cruz Bay.
The Sputnik Painkiller, in mix and match glasses, $5 all day long.
Today’s lunch takes us to Mongoose Junction and the dining patio at The Tap Room. Here we have a spicy buffalo shrimp quesadilla for $12.
And beer bratwurst, served with sauerkraut, briefly crisped on the griddle, and chips for $9.
And a vegetarian Mexican pizza with cheddar cheese, salsa, peppers, onions, black beans and sour cream for $9. Don’t forget the beer. They’ve got a choice or two!
Woody’s Block Party fundraiser for February’s Save Second Base American Cancer Society Relay for Life raised $18,777.
“An extra thanks to St. John Brewers and Castaways, for all their help with the event,” says Woody’s co-owner Todd Beaty. “And especially to the bartenders and waiters, who donated all of their tips to the cause. Here’s the saving second base.”
Last February’s Relay for Life raised well over $140,000 for breast cancer research, an amazing sum for a tiny island. Woody’s kickoff gets next year’s relay off to a pretty good start already.
From On-StJohn.com reader Carolee Collier, a picture of a bold donkey at Cinnamon Bay.
“We happened across this group trying to have a picnic lunch on the beach, but the donkey was making it rather difficult,” Carolee says. “He kept trying to help himself to the food on the table and even grabbed a plastic bag with a peanut butter sandwich in it.”
Carolee says one of the guys grabbed it back and, after a short tug-of-war, reclaimed the bag and the sandwich.
“Then he took the sandwich out of the bag and gave it back to the donkey,” she says.
About 200 people took part in Gifft Hill School’s second annual “Culturalypso” last week, held in honor of D. Hamilton Jackson.
The school’s Lower Campus front office manager, Angelita Bolques came up with the name for the free community carnival, a family-friendly event that this year included relay races, games, face painting, jewelry making, performances by GHS dancers in kindergarten through 5th grade, science experiments and educational booths.
The VI Fire Department also handed out pencils, rules, crayons, coloring books and inflatable batons.

Our first Painkiller is served up by cute Kim at High Tide.
As our incumbent Rum Punch winner, High Tide will be the only repeat entry.
Kim makes her Painkiller with Captian Morgan Private Stock spiced rum. “I like using spiced rum,” says Kim. “It adds a richer taste.” Orange juice, pineapple juice and a light hand on the Coco Lopez, free-floating cherry and grated nutmeg.
The High Tide Painkiller. $7 all day long. The beachfront location is on the house.
Here’s a new villa on the market at just about the highest point on Bordeaux Mountain. Bordeaux Falls is listed by Islandia Real Estate for $2.495 million, and includes four bedrooms with a separate studio.
