That’s the advertising part. Here’s the paddleboard story part, an activity called SUP, for Stand Up Paddleboarding.

“We got our first boards a couple of years ago and that’s when it started catching on here on St. John,” says Big Planet’s Pretlow Majette.

“The only equipment is a board and a paddle and it’s super easy to learn. Most people spend a little time doing the ‘Pocahontas’ paddling around on their knees, then shortly learn to stand up.”

St. John’s calm waters aren’t usually great for surfing, but are ideal for paddleboarding and Pretlow says it’s good exercise and he says it’s winning over even serious Watersports enthusiasts.

“My buddy Eric likes it because it doesn’t make his butt itch like his kayak does. Just saying the word ‘kayak’ makes my butt itch.”
