Biking on St. John? Not really

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012

We get inquiries like this once or twice a year about biking on St. John. We tell people it’s not a biking kind of place.

Anytime we see someone biking on St. John – and we don’t very often – we say ‘is he crazy?’

You have to be very fit to bike on St. John, and even if you are, it seems like a dangerous proposition.

And then we see this in the U.S. Airways in-flight magazine. A feature on St. John that tells readers you can enjoy everything from “horseback riding on the beach to biking and hiking trails that wind past the remains of old sugar mills.”

Are there biking trails that we just don’t know about?

Now THAT is a contest winning picture

Monday, January 16th, 2012

Bill Doebler, from Holland, Michigan, wins the 2011 Treasure Map photo contest with this dazzling shot of St. Thomas Harbor at dusk taken from the top of Paradise Point.

“I didn’t have a tripod, so I sat the camera on the railing next to our table at the restaurant for the exposure,” says Bill. “The calypso band was playing so loudly that the railing was vibrating, so the picture was taken in the short interval between two of their numbers.”

The Treasure Map people made good on their contest promise of Win a Trip Back, and Bill gets airfare for two, a week at a villa, a day sail and other prizes.

You can see other top photos taken on St. John and St. Thomas here (we’re particularly fond of the Best Shopping category.) And the 2012 Treasure Map is out, look for it and maybe you’ll win this year’s Trip Back.

A Giants fan on Honeymoon

Sunday, January 15th, 2012

Keep your eyes out for sandy versions of snowmen this time of year.

Like this one, at Honeymoon Beach. It comes from On-StJohn.com readers Tina and John Dorman, who just returned home to Connecticut after a St. John vacay.

“Thought we’d share a bit of our quirky Christmas fun,” says Tina. “With my husband an avid Giants and Bud Light fan, it was only appropriate that we decorate our sandman in honor of some of his favorite things.”

The great thing about sandmen? There’s no chance of them melting.

Flourishes: Not just for TP anymore

Saturday, January 14th, 2012

The toilet paper flourish is spreading beyond the bathroom.

We’re not entering our photo in the Best TP Flourish contest because it’s not TP, but the paper towels at Bongo Bongo have swag too.

Send us your photos.

Lunch of the Week: Shipwreck Landing

Friday, January 13th, 2012

Today’s Lunch of the Week takes us to Coral Bay, on our way to Salt Pond, and to Shipwreck Landing.

Here we have the fresh grilled Atlantic salmon, served with citrus butter, Jasmine rice and salad, for $17.75.

And the BBQ chicken sandwich, a grilled chicken breast in homemade tangy BBQ sauce, with fries, for $11.75.

Now that you’re well fed, go spend some money at the fun shops next door.

GastroGrub faces closing

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

With the doors locked at Happy Fish, more bad news for fans of good food comes from nearby, and relatively new, GastroGrub.

“GastroGrub is dangerously close to suffering the same fate [as Happy Fish],” chef and owner Allen Lancaster posted on Facebook and Twitter Thursday afternoon. “We are doing everything possible to avoid this occurring but some things are beyond our control…many of you have been very supportive and I thought it best to address the rumor mill before it ran amuck.”

Allen, who launched his GastroGrub concept at Tamarind Inn’s kitchen before going out on his own, says he entered the new restaurant greatly undercapitalized and hasn’t been able to get caught up.

Here’s the kind of food you’re missing if Allen doesn’t work things out or find a new place soon…

Happy Fish closes

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

Happy Fish served up its last sushi Wednesday night.  The popular restaurant on the second floor of The Marketplace is closed.

We’ve been unable to get ahold of owner Dave Trent, who took over at Happy Fish recently, to find out why, but we have confirmed the restaurant is officially out of business.

We are bummed about this. Happy Fish served quality food and we regret we didn’t go nearly often enough.

GHS students perform Godspell Junior Friday

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

If the kick-off of St. John’s flag football season doesn’t suit you, head to the Gifft Hill School this weekend for a few performances of Godspell Junior by students at GHS and the New England Youth Theater.

Here are the kids, with dress rehearsals under their belt and ready for the stage.

Performances are scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the GHS Upper Campus.

Tickets are available at the door for a suggested donation of $10 for adults and $5 for students and children. You can get more information by calling 776-1730.

Football season begins

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

The St. John Football Association begins its season Friday January 13 and the schedule is out.

It’s just like Monday Night Football, only it’s on Friday and Saturday nights, and sometimes Monday and Tuesday.

Football is also a spectator sport, so here’s a link to the schedule for the first 12 games.

Broadway Comes to St. John (and vice versa)

Tuesday, January 10th, 2012

Genuine Broadway actors are on their way to St. John, and you get a chance to go to Broadway.

The St. John School of the Arts presents its 2nd annual Broadway Comes to St. John January 27, premiering the new show “World of Dreams” at the Westin Ballroom, and for three weeks, five Broadway actors on island will be working with 4th graders from all St. John schools as part of the event.

The 6 p.m. show is for those who buy a $200 ticket, and includes a champagne reception and an after show dinner at a sponsor restaurant, including Da Livio, Fatty Crab, Fish Trap, La Tapa, Lime Inn, Morgan’s Mango, Ocean Grill, Rhumb Lines or ZoZo’s.

The 8 p.m. show is FREE, though the school gladly welcomes donations.

And there’s a raffle too. A $100 ticket buys you a shot at a $5,000 Broadway package, including roundtrip airfare for two to New York, tickets to “Priscilla: Queen of the Desert,” “Chicago,” and a third show to be announced, as well as back stage tours, dinner at Sardi’s and Etcetera Etcetera and three nights hotel accommodations.

Buy your tickets at Connections or the St. John School for the Arts. Off island? Buy raffle tickets with a Mastercard or Visa by calling 340-779-4322 or emailing info@stjohnschoolofthearts.org.

Like the artwork? St. John artist Cheryl Geller donated her talented services for the Broadway posters and the school’s new logo.

The Tourist Trap tortoises

Monday, January 9th, 2012

If you’re in the neighborhood, stop by the Tourist Trap and meet Tina and Tiny, two red-footed tortoises that have found a new home there.

Tina, the larger of the two, was found trapped behind a wall at a nearby villa. Tiny was found all alone a short time later by neighbors.

Tina and Tiny now have themselves quite the little tortoise village to roam around in, including a nice two-story house, a church and a school.

You can read all about red-footed tortoises here.

Grande Bay goes fractional

Sunday, January 8th, 2012

When Grande Bay approached us about advertising, we said “absolutely,” and Grande Bay has yet another new story to tell.

The resort has dedicated several units, from studio, one, two and three-bedrooms, to a fractional ownership program, and you buy time in a season, not just a specific week.

“The fractional ownership program is extremely flexible in that we have divided time into St. John seasons,” says Grande Bay’s John Alvarado. “For example, the winter season runs from January through April, and if you purchase this season, every year you can choose a different week that works for your schedule.”

As an unusual bonus: members have an option to have fractional ownership in 32-foot powerboat and a 4 door Jeep Wrangler. Membership starts at $9,900.

There’s a new general manager on board too. Paul Helson comes from the Inn at Palmetto Bluff Resort in South Carolina and has also worked for the Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton and Rosewood Hotels & Resorts.

Read about the Grande Bay fractional ownership program, here. And check out our tour of the pool when it first opened in 2010 here.
