Castaway’s puts WAPA bill on ice
Just like every bar and restaurant on St. john, Castaway’s Tavern was paying some hefty WAPA bills every month, so owner Dan Boudreau decided it was time to do something about it.
Dan replaced all the bar coolers with gigantic ice chests and turned his downstairs walk-in cooler into a storage room.
“They get iced down once a day and actually keep the beer colder,” says Dan.
The upstairs kitchen still needs full refrigeration, but eliminating refrigerators, coolers and the walk-in downstairs, along with some electrical upgrades and some added insulation, has cut Castaway’s WAPA bill … by a third.
That makes a big difference.

WAPA sucks..So glad Castaways is using ice instead of WAPA.I am sure the beer is colder on ice. These guys will stay in business a lot longer now by cutting the cost of WAPA.At least we know a cold beer is waiting for us when the power goes out.Cheers to you.Thats using your head Castaways.

Dan can now tell WAPA to “Kiss My Ice!” The cost savings should make Happy Hour much happier.

We met in Castaways after we both had about 5 Heineys each. We stumbled back to her place above Ronnies pizza, and that began a happy union. When we sobered up, we realized how well both of us hold our booze. It was something we had in common! We’re going on one year strong and we’re still swinging from the chandalier and always opt for the room with the vibrating bed.

Well, then–you guys would probably love to “hang and bang” in the chair swing at Rendezvous By The Sea! (NO PICTURES, PLEASE!)

Great idea. But me likes me beers in bottles of the longneck variety. With a stubby little Red Stripe mixed in, of course.

Best bar on St. John period!!! Only place that greets you as soon as you walk in and makes sure your drink is always full. Went there for dinner for the first time in Feb, great food and service, will definitely be going back there on our next trip to STJ! Also, WAPA sucks!
