The $5 ATM
ATM’s charge you a fee for out-of-network cash withdrawals, we are all cool with that.
But five dollars? That’s really highway robbery.
That’s the cost of cash at Scotia Bank’s Marketplace ATM.
“Did you click ‘Agree’ yet? ” I said to the guy next to me. “I already agreed. Let me take a picture of your screen.”
“Okay. I should probably take more than $50 out, right?” he says.”
Math says yes. You should.

If this was an ATM charge around here, it would be highway robbery….however, since the ATM machine in this story is on St. John and run on electricity, I’m thinking the $5.00 charge just barely covers the WAPA utility charge to operate it.
Just a thought,

Do ATMs have a “sleep” feature? If no one uses them for 10 minutes they can power down the screen? That seems like a no brainer for 24 hour ATMs.

In the words of Frank Barone: “Holy Crap!”
No wonder I’ve never seen a skinny banker…

Waa waa waa…zero ATM fees are a right!!! Let’s protest. Everything should be free.

I remember when those ATM’s were the only ones on the island that DIDNT charge a service fee!!! We would make a special trip to them because of that!
Yea, this past trip – I hit declined.

Is the Scotia diagonally across from Connections in Cruz Bay the same price? If so I think they have gone up. I thought they were around $2 last summer.
Suzy must own an ATM.

Ahhh… beautiful STJ – - home of the $11 bag of chips and the $5 cash fee.

That $5 fee could be better spent on some boozy undertones…
January 29th, 2013 05:18
Hooray for boozy undertones, but the big fee probably has to do with a change in the law that took place yesterday in the US that allows banks and retailers to charge the new fees. It was all over the news in the last 24.

Called Scotia and will setup a free account when on Island this May no fees for members as long as you have more than $50 in the account. Plus who loves to get bank statments from St. John!!!!!

“ACCESS” FEE IS SPELLED WRONG, SHOULD BE “EXCESS” FEE.

Good idea Jmass10! Although to be honest, I bring some cash with me when I come down and have never once in 6 years used an ATM.
