DCA to STT almost nonstop

The new US Airways Flight 1000 from Washington Reagan National to St. Thomas is about as close to a nonstop flight from National as you can get.

You have to be an early riser. Flight 1000 leaves DCA at 5:45 a.m., and makes a 45 minute layover in Charlotte without Washington passengers getting off the plane.

Total flight time: about 5 hours and, even with the one hour time difference right now, that still gets you to St. John in time for a late lunch.

The only true nonstop Washington to St. Thomas flight is seasonal, but operating right now: United Flight 1443 that leaves Dulles at 8:30 a.m. and also gets you there in time for lunch.

Where do you fly from…and what’s your flight like?

    We have flown:
    UsAir: Columbus-Charlotte-STT
    Delta: Columbus-Atlanta-STT
    American: Columbus-Miami-STT
They all left around 6-7AM, and the Miami flight got us there the earliest, no layover in Miami to speak of, by the time we got to the gate, they were boarding!! And we got there at 1:45PM!!

We used to fly the early morning (6:45) AA flight either via Miami or San Juan. Sometimes AA would fly a non stop to STT.

We also flew US Air via Charlotte once but you don’t end up on STJ until late afternoon.

We now fly the Jet Blue midnight “red-eye” through San Juan. You get in at 4:00 AM and the layover to STT is a couple of hours. However, even with the ferry ride you can be “ass-in-the-sand” well before noon.

I looked on the US Air schedule PDF online and FLT 1000 does not show up yet. Is it 7 days a week?

Ditto the Jet Blue red eye from Boston to San Juan. A layover in PR that’s long enough to grab a cup of coffee, and arrival in STT before 8am.

Delta from whatever DC area airport is offering the best fare. Then a layover in Atlanta with arrival at STT around 2. We usually make it in time for Happy Hour.

There is no such thing as a direct flight from Dallas/Ft. Worth to STT. You either have to stop in Miami, San Juan, or Atlanta. Since DFW is a hub for AA, it makes it pretty hard to get another flight on another airline out of here.We usually leave at 5:45am and arriver STT at 3:00ish. We then can get to the villa on St. John and have drinks to watch the sunset….makes for a looooong travel day!

RDU – back home because flight is cancelled – RDU – ATL – plane breaks – STT.

Total travel time 20 hours. For added fun, throw in a flight being diverted to some small airport that has no gas.

No wonder we haven’t been back in almost 3 years. I need a private jet.

    CJ –

    JetBlue 850 BOS-SJU 11:55PM – 3:45AM
    JetBlue 1030 SJU-STT 7:00AM – 7:37AM

If you don’t mind the 2+hr layover it is well worth it. You do all of your flying at night on a nearly empty aircraft.

When we do this we can usually make one of the first ferries out of Red Hook and be checked into our hotel and on the beach before 10AM.

From Minneapolis we spend a night in Atlanta to get on the first flight out the following day that puts us in STT around 1:30PM. Spend the night there and then it’s off to Red Hook for the 8AM ferry for 11 days this November! Can’t come soon enough!

We leave at 8:55 pm from San Francisco, change planes in Miami and arrive in STT at 12:40 pm the next day. That is as close to a straight through flight as you can get from California. That is the plan for July. :)

Last time we came, we left Charleston, SC around 7 am in hopes of getting TO STJ by mid afternoon. The airlines had other ideas and pushed that back about 3 hours. So much for early rising. But it’s still worth the gamble. Nice sunset :-)

If you’re coming from St Louis, American is the only way to go (630 am) to STT (200PM) with a short stop in Miami. After chasing a cab to Red Hook, the ferry, renting a jeep and buying groceries we’re kicked back on our Estate Concordia deck watching the sunset with a bottle of wine by 6PM

MJ – The Newark-STT flight says 4 hours when you book, but in actuality it’s about 3 hours 15 minutes. They significantly pad that time. By the time you get the ferry to St John however, you are probably still looking at 2ish by the time your rump hits the Cinnamon Beach sand :) ….

Flying out of CLT can be pricey if going direct but have done the direct USAir flight and am going with AA flight through MIA this summer, which was a little easier on the pocketbook. Also have done the RDU-STT through MIA.

Tulsa, Ok. Best flight is TUL-ATL-STT on Delta – we can leave at 6a and be on St John for supper most times (about 13 hours after leaviing our house). We’re not usually in time to catch the last ferry out of Charlotte Amalie. Worst flight ever was TUL-CHI-SJU-STT on American that took 18 hours from house to Cruz Bay…

We leave Phoenix at 7am and get into Miam at 2:30 and then take the AA 5pm or so flight (usually runs late) to St. Thomas. We stay overnight in St. Thomas and then take the morning ferry from Charlotte Amalie to St. John. Long time getting to St. John but so worth it – love getting that first glimpse of St. John. See you last week of July and first week of August.
