Do you take the airport’s free rum?
Do you stop at the rum booth on your way to the baggage claim?
It doesn’t seem like many people do.
“Sometimes nobody stops,” said this rum giver. “But sometimes it seems like everybody does.”
The Tourism Department pays the rum booth employees and you won’t find anything but made in the Virgin Islands rum being handed out – namely flavored Cruzan.

When we meet house guests at the gate we always stop at the rum. We toast our friends’ arrivals …. We’ve had so many friends and family visit we are now close friends with the rum folks!
March 5th, 2013 06:52
Really?…Do bears go in the woods? How could you pass up this island tradition. Fourth trip coming up in June, and once again I’ll have my two shots (mine + wife’s).
March 5th, 2013 07:18
Most definately! You need that shot before getting your car rental!
March 5th, 2013 07:40
That question has two of my most favorite words–free and rum. I see peope walking by too. Oh well, their loss!!
March 5th, 2013 09:25
Every time and then a quick stop at the liquor store to buy a bottle for the week.
March 5th, 2013 09:40
As a VERY frequent island visitor, I start to look forward to the rum booth just as we touch down in St. Thomas. There is no better way to start the vacation and know that you are finally back on-island. And it helps while waiting for the ferry too!
March 5th, 2013 09:46
Heck yes we do! After the welcome shot of sun an humidity on the tarmac, this is the next step to knowing we’ve arrived!
March 5th, 2013 09:51
I don’t always fly into STT USVI, but when I do, I always stop at the rum booth. I have found they are not always there, but when they are, I show my appreciation by trying all the flavors they are offering……stay thirsty, my friends….

Of course.
March 5th, 2013 10:06
Oh yes! Vacation officially starts with a visit to the rum booth. It is the signal that I am now “somewhere else”. 8th trip planned in June and already counting down the days!
March 5th, 2013 10:15
I usually pass up this freebee but have changed my mind. Was in STX last week where they have the same set up and sampled the “black cherry flavor”–not too bad.

I think that you will find the you are getting a too biased a sample to make any definitive statements on th eproportion of folks who partake of the rum…..since the people who frequent here are those that are part of the ‘boozy undertones’ i think i will name my new band that…..
March 5th, 2013 10:32
The rum booth at the airport is the ‘official’ start of our vacation.
March 5th, 2013 10:37
Ditto Bonnie!
March 5th, 2013 10:47
The rum shot sets us up for the van ride to Red Hook where we settle in for another rum drink at the bar waiting for the ferry. Get right then drive left…
March 5th, 2013 11:23
LOL @Lori and SteveV!!!
-Bert
March 5th, 2013 11:38
ALWAYS…and pick up liquor for the villa, grab a drink from the bar for the cab ride to Red Hook and grab anther while we’re waiting for the ferry to St John…its tradition and the start of our vacation…
March 5th, 2013 11:58
I mean SteveH……my finger went wild on me and hit the wrong key it does than sometimes.
-Bert
March 5th, 2013 12:01
HECK YES! And then a beer at the bar near the luggage stop
Can’t wait to get back
March 5th, 2013 12:15
I’m thinking about the rum booth while I’m still in the Philadelphia Airport. It’s definately the “Official” start of vacation when you grab a shot or two, or three.
March 5th, 2013 12:21
Bert I believe you were applauding the comment made by SteveH and Lori…(still trying to figure out what “eproportion” means…:) I would consider stopping at the rum cart as a statement of civic pride… and would certainly do my part!
March 5th, 2013 12:26
Certainly do, then if time allows a trip into Tickles, followed by the Rum Punch at the Westin Dock.
March 5th, 2013 13:38
Now that’s one stop we never miss. It’s the official start of another visit to Paradise.
March 5th, 2013 14:16
Duh, Every time. Just wish the one on the STJ Ferry dock was manned more often.
March 5th, 2013 14:50
Heck yeah! It truly is the start of “Island Time” I follow up with a beer while waiting for luggage and then another while waiting for the ferry then I like to hit the High Tide if it can be worked in. Oh yeah I can taste it now only 32 days away!
March 5th, 2013 15:00
I am sorry to say that in 6 trips, I never have!! I always run to the rental counter and send the hubs to bag claim, after he makes a stop for a Corona. I’m ashamed! This December for sure!!
March 5th, 2013 18:15
Always…and I grab one of each flavor, because of these tasty treats, I have found a few additional flavors that I like.
March 5th, 2013 19:25
LOL Bert, I always knew you were the most interesting man!!
March 6th, 2013 05:51
I consider it a “Rite of Passage”…and one I whole heartedly agree with!
March 6th, 2013 06:11
Are there AA meetings for visiting tourists? Maybe they could sign people up while they are sucking down their little cups of flavored rum… the world’s most interesting man could be the instructor. The class could be called “Boozy Undertones on STJ: how to survive a week in a place where rum is cheaper than water”. Do those shot glasses come in a bigger size?
March 6th, 2013 08:01
I thought that was what the TSA Fee funded.
Absolutely. I took mine and my partners. A wonderful tradition!
March 6th, 2013 08:01
This last trip (#10) my son reached for the rum samples and the nice lady behind the counter said, “You hafta be 18 to drink here in de ilons.” He had a sheepish look like he was breaking the law but proudly shouted to the world, “I AM!”
March 7th, 2013 16:54
ALWAYS!
March 7th, 2013 18:31
Sometimes…. we take two
March 10th, 2013 06:11
Always!
